Specifically IW promotes early education of young women, in science and engineering (ISLAND WISE Days); provides accessible and exemplar role models and mentors in informal and formal settings (Mentor-Mentee and Mentee to Mentor Program); provides networks and identify solutions for encouraging young women to pursue science and engineering careers (Professional Development for Guidance Counsellors) and provides the opportunity for hands on learning and educational successes (ISLAND WISE Days and Summer Camps).
ISLAND WISE RETREATS
Island WISE hosts three retreats/year. One on campus in March and two off campus in more remote locations. Last years locations included Waycobah and Potlotek as well as CBU. These events included more than 300 young women from across our Island and introduced them to STEM via a hands on interactive day of Science.
IW CAMP
For two years running IW has hosted a free one week summer camp for young girls ages 9-11. The camp runs from 9-5 and involves 5 days of interactive hands on science. The girls start the week developing a science project they work on all week and present it to their families on Friday. This year one group even extracted the iron from Shreddies! Registration opens up in June and the 40 spots fill up fast!
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT DAYS
IW is hosting a PD Day for MK teachers this year. Details to come soon!
SCIENCE LITERACY WEEK
In collaboration with CBU, IW hosted a week long celebration of Science Literacy in 2017 and do to the success it is happening again in Sept 2018. Last years highlights included talks on Chemophobia, Women in Science, Science Outreach for Kids, Contests and Prizes and more!
